Weil er Samba und Bossa Nova mit neuen Elementen auffrischte, wurde er vielfach angefeindet; weil er in seinen Texten auch politisch schonungslos Stellung bezog, musste er erst für Monate ins Gefängnis und später für Jahre ins Exil: Der Brasilianer Caetano Veloso ist ohne Zweifel eine der faszinierendsten Persönlichkeiten in der Musikszene unserer Zeit.

Brazilian composer and singer Caetano Veloso was born in 1942 and spent his youth in northeastern Brazil where he was exposed to Caribbean, African and North American music. Recently, a 42 CD edition of his musical career was released. Musically it covers rock, Bossa Nova, reggae, as well as compositions from The Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson. His own compositions tend to focus on issue of spiritualiy and culture. Veloso also spoke out against Brazil’s military dictatorship in the 1960s. He was jailed for four months and then spent four years in exile in England where he recorded a critically-acclaimed album in English. While in exile, he and Gilberto Gil and Tom Ze´ developed the hybrid music known as Tropicalismo, which combines Bossa Nova, traditional Brazilian music and American rock music. He has often been called “The Brazilian Bob Dylan”. His 2002 book, “Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil” provides insight into the artistic influences and political events which shaped the music of Caetano Veloso.
